About this position

PhD position in Nano Photonics with Fibre Cavities (P2605) at the University of Basel, Switzerland, in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland.

The project sits at the intersection of ultrafast laser technology, nanophotonics, quantum optics, and optical telecommunications. Two research groups are involved: the Photonic Ultrafast Systems Group led by Prof. Bojan Resan and the Nano-Photonics Group led by Prof. Richard Warburton. The work aims to develop micron-scale fibre cavities with excellent in-coupling and out-coupling efficiencies and designer nano-structured mirror profiles. Rapid and scalable nanofabrication will be explored via femtosecond laser ablation.

The successful PhD candidate will work on generating and characterizing sub-micron Bessel beams, performing nano-machining trials on glass samples, optimizing laser parameters for mirror template design, building open micro-cavities with nano-machined fibres for quantum communications, and designing a micro-cavity femtosecond laser for high-data-rate telecommunications. The project offers a highly interdisciplinary environment spanning state-of-the-art ultrafast experiments in Windisch/Brugg and quantum optics experiments in Basel.

The position is part of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) PhD school, which supports around 30 scientists and provides a collaborative research environment, training in soft skills, social events, and a competitive Swiss PhD salary. The broader SNI community covers quantum physics and chemistry, nanotechnology, materials science, biochemistry, cell biology, and medical research.

Eligibility: BS or MS degree in physics, photonics, engineering, or a related field; strong motivation for applied experimental laboratory work; experience with femtosecond lasers and/or quantum optics is advantageous; experience with Python, MATLAB, or other scientific programming/data analysis tools is also a plus; communication and teamwork skills are important.

Application: Apply online via www.phd.nanoscience.ch or the direct application link. Questions may be directed to Dr. Andreas Baumgartner at [email protected] or to the project leaders. The vacancy can be filled any time from now, and the application must be completed by 31 December 2026; the posted deadline in the listing is 2026-10-15.
