About this position

PhD position at the University of Salzburg in the Department of Chemistry and Physics of Materials, focused on the fundamental origin of the low-voltage plateau in hard carbon anodes for sodium-ion batteries.

This interdisciplinary project combines experimental and computational research to understand how sodium is stored in carbon nanostructures. On the experimental side, the successful candidate will synthesize hard carbon anodes, investigate their nanostructure, and perform electrochemical characterization, including ex situ and operando SAXS/WAXS measurements. On the theoretical side, the project includes building model nanostructures of increasing complexity and carrying out density functional theory (DFT) calculations of Na incorporation. The results will be used to compare competing explanations for the low-voltage plateau and to develop a structure-based design principle for improved rate capability and energy density.

The work is carried out jointly between the Energy Materials and Materials Theory groups, with access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and high-performance computing infrastructure. The project is therefore well suited to candidates interested in the intersection of battery materials, computational physics, physical chemistry, and materials engineering.

Applicants should hold a completed MSc degree in material science, physics, physical chemistry, or a closely related discipline. Experience with at least one of X-ray scattering techniques, electrochemistry, or DFT calculations is expected, together with excellent oral and written English skills. Enrolment in the subject-specific doctoral program at the University of Salzburg is also required.

The position is full-time, temporary, and based in Salzburg, Austria. The annual gross salary is at least €52,865.40, with possible overpayment depending on qualification and experience.
