About this position
The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Braga, Portugal is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Muñoz Research Group under the European CellPacT project. The position is focused on the development of organic, polymeric, and metal-organic compounds and materials for electric energy storage, with a particular emphasis on rechargeable battery technologies.
The research environment combines advanced materials synthesis, structural and physicochemical characterisation, and electrochemical testing. The group’s work is aimed at materials for energy storage and conversion, with applications in renewable energy integration, transport, power delivery under harsh conditions, and efficient energy distribution. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, synthesis, optimisation, and study of new materials, as well as their performance in electrodes, electrolytes, and complete cell configurations.
Key scientific tasks include electrochemical studies, materials characterisation, and correlating structure/composition with battery performance. The role also involves publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences, contributing to project reporting and proposal preparation, and supporting the supervision of MSc and PhD students. Collaboration with national and international research partners is also expected.
The appointment is a full-time, 12-month postdoctoral contract with a salary range of 37K–40K. Benefits include private health insurance, family allowances, relocation support, free nursery service subject to availability, support for dependent children’s education fees, diplomatic/tax-related benefits, and 30 working days of annual leave.
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or a related field. Strong hands-on experience in electrochemical energy storage is required, especially in lithium-ion and/or sodium-ion battery technologies, electrode fabrication, and cell assembly. Experience with galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is also required, alongside strong scientific writing skills. Additional desirable experience includes polymer electrolytes, solid-state or gel-polymer systems, organic electrode materials, metal-organic frameworks, coordination polymers, and advanced characterisation methods such as XPS, SEM/TEM, XRD, FTIR, Raman, or thermal analysis. Excellent English is required.
