About this position
ETH Zürich is offering a doctoral position in Earth Observation and Remote Sensing at the Chair of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing, Institute of Environmental Engineering. The project starts from autumn/winter 2026 and is centered on multi-modal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for large-scale rapid change observations in permafrost regions.
The research will investigate and develop generic methods and algorithms for estimating environmental parameters over Arctic regions, with a particular focus on retrogressive thaw slumps (RTS). These rapidly evolving landforms have important implications for ecosystem balance, hydrology, infrastructure, and climate change because they can mobilize previously frozen organic carbon. Because the study area is remote, the project relies on space-borne observation approaches, especially TanDEM-X difference digital elevation models and related radar satellite data.
The successful PhD student will work on detecting RTS at pan-Arctic, watershed, and local scales using TanDEM-X data and other SAR-based methods. The position is well suited to candidates interested in remote sensing, signal processing, geophysics, environmental monitoring, and geoinformatics, particularly those who want to develop advanced computational methods for Earth observation.
ETH Zürich is a leading international university in science and technology, and the role sits within a multidisciplinary and international research environment. The university highlights a strong commitment to diversity, sustainability, and excellent working conditions.
Applicants should have a master’s degree or diploma in electrical engineering, geomatics engineering, geophysics, physics, or a related field. A background in digital signal processing or image processing is expected, and experience with SAR or array signal processing is an advantage. Programming experience in Matlab, Python, C/C++, or similar languages is required, along with strong analytical skills and fluency in English. A valid European Category B driver’s license is also required.
Applications must be submitted online through the ETH Zurich portal. The application package should include a cover letter describing motivation and research experience, a full CV, transcripts with grades, a PDF of the master’s thesis, and contact details for two referees. Email and postal applications will not be considered. For questions about the position, contact Prof. Irena Hajnsek at [email protected].
