About this position
Two PhD positions are available in the group of Tom Lacassagne, Associate Professor at IMT Nord Europe, focusing on projects at the intersection of fluid dynamics, bioprocess intensification, and algal technologies. The research aims to address critical challenges in scaling up sustainable microalgae and cyanobacteria cultures for applications in carbon capture, renewable energy, and biotechnology. The projects are highly interdisciplinary, combining advanced experimental and modeling frameworks to study the rheology and hydrodynamics of algal and cyanobacteria co-cultures, as well as the design of innovative photobioreactors for shear-sensitive microalgae species.
One PhD project is a collaboration with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), supervised by Tom Lacassagne, Mathieu Pernice, and Nature Poddar, focusing on the coupled rheological and hydrodynamic mechanisms in co-cultures. The second is a cotutelle PhD with Faculté Polytechnique de Mons and Anne-Lise Hantson, centered on photobioreactor design. Both projects offer opportunities to work in international teams and contribute to the development of energy-efficient, high-density algal cultivation systems aligned with global sustainability goals.
Applicants should have a strong background in fluid mechanics, chemical engineering, environmental science, or related fields, and be motivated to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment. Experience with experimental or modeling approaches in fluid dynamics, bioprocess engineering, or algal biotechnology is highly desirable. Funding is available through joint applications, with further details provided upon request. Applications are reviewed continuously, with deadlines in early February, until the positions are filled.
For more information, candidates are encouraged to consult the project links or contact the supervisors directly. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in sustainability, renewable energy, and advanced biotechnologies to engage in cutting-edge research with leading international partners.
