About this position
TU Delft is advertising three ERC-funded PhD positions in theoretical chemistry and physics within the Department of Quantum Nanoscience at the Delft University of Technology.
The positions are part of the ERC project SPINOCCHIO (“A new quantum chemical approach to spins on surfaces”) in the Alessio group. The research focuses on the electronic structure and magnetic behavior of molecular and atomic spins on surfaces, including spin lattices, spin relaxation, optical addressability, and surface effects on magnetic adsorbates.
Possible research directions include developing periodic quantum embedding methods, combining EOM-CC theory with periodic DFT, studying spin-phonon couplings, modeling spin-spin, spin-orbit, and Zeeman interactions, exploring optical cycles and decay pathways, and building effective Hamiltonians for magnetic exchange interactions in surface spin lattices.
Eligibility: applicants should have an MSc degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline. A strong background in condensed matter theory, electronic structure methods, many-body physics, and molecular simulations is required. Knowledge of magnetism and open-shell systems is preferred, and experience with computational methods and scientific programming is highly desirable. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are expected, along with the ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
Funding: the positions are ERC-funded and offered for four years each. Salary follows the Dutch university collective agreement, starting from €3059 gross/month in year 1 and rising to €3881 gross/month in year 4, plus holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus.
Location: Delft, Netherlands. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School and work in an international research environment at the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
Application deadline: 24 August 2026. Apply online through the TU Delft careers portal and upload a cover letter, CV, link to your Master’s thesis, a short description of previous research/thesis work, and relevant publications if applicable.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
