About this position
The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Astrophysics offers a prestigious PhD programme in Physics, Astrophysics, and Astrochemistry, based in Munich, Germany. This joint initiative involves the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU), Technical University of Munich (TUM), Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA), Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), University Observatory Munich (USM), and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Together, these institutions form one of the largest centres for astrophysical research worldwide, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and the world's largest telescopes.
The programme is designed for international students, with all teaching and communication conducted in English. IMPRS students are also offered funds and opportunities to attend German language classes. The PhD curriculum spans six semesters, beginning each year on 1 September, with flexibility for earlier or later starts upon consultation with supervisors. The course structure includes an Introductory Course (combined with the Essentials of Advanced Astrophysics MSc programme at LMU Munich) and up to seven Advanced Courses covering modern astrophysics topics. Students must pass a written exam at the end of the Introductory Course, and participate in biannual student symposia, transferable skills courses, and career coaching.
PhD projects are supervised by IMPRS professors from member institutes or associated research groups, with regular progress monitoring by a thesis committee and support from a mentor programme. The IMPRS fosters an open, international, and inclusive research culture, with about two-thirds of students coming from outside Germany. Students benefit from international guest lecturers, intercultural training, and opportunities for collaboration with partners in Germany and abroad.
Funding is available for all PhD students, who receive a work contract with a gross annual salary of 37,000 - 40,000 EUR, depending on study year, family status, and tax class. There are no tuition fees, and the semester enrolment fee (about 150 EUR) includes a public transport ticket. IMPRS students may be enrolled at LMU or TUM for up to six semesters, depending on supervisor affiliation. Accommodation support is provided for students relocating to Munich or Garching.
Applicants must hold an MSc in Physics or Astrophysics (or equivalent) with a Master's thesis of at least 60 ECTS points and a final grade of 'good' (2.5) or better. Exceptional candidates with a Bachelor's degree (top 10% or 'very good' results) may be considered for direct admission, subject to additional coursework. English proficiency is required for non-native speakers, demonstrated by TOEFL (minimum 75 iBT/550 PBT), IELTS (minimum band score 6), or equivalent. Applications are accepted online from mid-August to 1 November each year. For more information, visit IMPRS Astrophysics or email [email protected].
IMPRS students enjoy a vibrant academic environment, structured research training, career advisory services, and broad support for international students, including visa assistance, welcome events, and specialist counselling. Munich offers a rich cultural and recreational landscape, making it an attractive destination for graduate study and research.
