About this position

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Astrophysics offers a comprehensive PhD programme in Physics, Astrophysics, and Astrochemistry, jointly awarded by Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) and Technical University of Munich (TUM). The programme is conducted in cooperation with leading research institutions, including the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA), Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), University Observatory Munich (USM), and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), forming one of the largest centres for astrophysical research worldwide.

All teaching and communication are in English, and international students are encouraged to participate. German language classes are available and funded for IMPRS students. The programme begins each year on 1 September, with a welcome workshop and orientation. The PhD duration is typically three to four years (six semesters), and students are enrolled at either LMU or TUM, depending on their supervisor's affiliation.

IMPRS students benefit from outstanding research facilities, access to the world's largest telescopes, and a stimulating scientific environment. The curriculum includes an Introductory Course (with a mandatory exam) and up to seven Advanced Courses on modern astrophysics topics, taught by professors from all partner institutions. Students also participate in biannual symposia, transferable skills courses, and career coaching. Research projects are supervised by IMPRS professors, with regular progress monitoring by a thesis committee and support from a mentor programme.

Funding is provided through a work contract, offering a gross salary of approximately 37,000 - 40,000 EUR per year. There are no tuition fees, but a semester enrolment fee of about 150 EUR covers public transport. The programme supports students in finding accommodation and provides comprehensive services for international students, including visa support, buddy programmes, and career advisory services. Participation in international conferences and workshops is encouraged and financially supported.

Admission requirements include an MSc in Physics or Astrophysics (or equivalent) with a research thesis of at least 60 ECTS and a final grade of at least 'good' (2.5). Exceptional Bachelor's graduates (top 10% or 'very good' results) may be considered for direct admission, subject to additional coursework. Non-native English or German speakers must provide proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent). Applications are accepted online from mid-August to 1 November each year.
