About this position
Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the University of Bergen, Department of Earth Science, in the project ICICLE, a 3-year fixed-term appointment focused on tectonics-glacial erosion interaction and coupled geodynamic-glacial erosion modelling.
The project investigates how climate, glacial(-fluvial) erosion, and tectonic deformation interact over geological timescales to shape mountain belts in ocean-continent subduction systems, with a particular focus on the Andes. The research uses novel 2D and 3D coupled geodynamic-glacial(-fluvial) erosion models to study subduction-orogen evolution, the interplay of tectonics and surface processes in the Southern Andes, and the tectonic versus erosional controls on along-strike variability.
The work will be carried out at the University of Bergen, with possible research stays at the University of Aarhus and GFZ Potsdam. The wider ICICLE project is an interdisciplinary collaboration led by Dr Sebastian Wolf, with co-investigators and collaborators across Bergen, Aarhus, Potsdam, and several international institutions.
Applicants must hold a PhD equivalent in Geodynamics, Tectonics or Geomorphology, or have submitted the thesis before the deadline, with the degree awarded before employment begins. The advert emphasizes a strong background in quantitative tectonic or surface process modelling, quantitative earth science, and geodynamics and long-term tectonics. Experience with thermo-mechanical modelling or surface-process modelling is considered an advantage. Strong publication potential, international presentation experience, independent working ability, collaboration skills, and excellent English are required.
The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 685,900 upon appointment, participation in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and welfare benefits. The successful candidate may also be supported in developing qualifying work and, in some cases, the appointment may be extended under the institution’s rules.
Applications must be submitted via JobbNorge and include a motivation statement, research statement, detailed justification of qualifications against the requirements, names and contact details of two referees, CV, transcripts and diplomas, relevant certificates/references, and a publication list with links. If the PhD is not yet completed, a statement from the institution confirming thesis submission is required.
Deadline: 1 November 2026 (23:59, Europe/Oslo).

What's required
Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) in Geodynamics, Tectonics or Geomorphology, or have submitted the doctoral thesis before the application deadline; the PhD must be awarded before employment. A background and research interest in quantitative tectonic or surface process modelling and quantitative earth science is required, as is a background and research interest in geodynamics and long-term tectonics. Applicants must show evidence of the ability to present and publish research internationally and documented research potential through published work and a clear research statement. Experience with thermo-mechanical modelling or surface processes modelling is an advantage. Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured way, collaborate with others, and have excellent written and oral English skills.
