About this position
Western Norway University of Applied Sciences is advertising a PhD Research Fellow in Computer Science focused on computing for high energy physics. The project is centered on grid computing, high throughput computing, and the software stack used by the ALICE experiment at CERN, especially the JAliEn middleware. The work aims to improve performance, stability, job scheduling, and overall utilization of limited computing resources for large-scale physics data processing.
The position is based at Campus Bergen in the Department of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. The PhD candidate will join the PhD programme in Computer Science: Software Engineering, Sensor Networks and Engineering Computing and work closely with staff at HVL, the JAliEn group at CERN, and current master’s and PhD students.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related field, or be very near completion with the degree awarded within 4 weeks after the deadline. Strong experience in grid computing, high-volume data processing, HTC/cloud resources, Java, C++, and database/SQL optimization is advantageous. Candidates who already hold a PhD in this field are not eligible. Academic performance, thesis quality, publications, research/teaching experience, software engineering skills, and a proposed research plan will be considered.
Funding and duration: the appointment is for 3 years, with the possibility of a 1-year extension. PhD research fellows receive an annual work expense fund for conference travel, research visits, and equipment. Salary follows Norwegian public sector rules for position code 1017 Research Fellow, with pension, insurance, and loan schemes.
How to apply: submit the application online through Jobbnorge. Upload the master thesis, up to 15 selected publications, a full CV with publication list, diplomas, and certificates. If documents are not in English or a Scandinavian language, certified translations are required, and applicants with foreign degrees must include recognition documentation from HK-dir if applicable.
Deadline: 15 September 2026.
