About this position

PhD Research Fellowship in Circular Battery Strategies at the University of Inland Norway (INN), within the Center for Research on Digitalization and Sustainability (CREDS) and the Inland School of Business and Social Sciences.

This three-year PhD position sits at the intersection of innovation studies, sustainability transitions, circular economy, business model change, and value chains for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The project explores circular resource flows, reuse and repair strategies, recycling systems, and competing end-of-life pathways for batteries and battery materials, with a strong focus on energy storage and mobility.

The successful candidate will join an international research team at CREDS and contribute to one or both of its research groups. The position is based at Innlandet Science Park in Kongsvinger, Norway, and a high degree of on-site presence is expected. Norway is highlighted as a promising empirical context because of its early and extensive adoption of battery-electric vehicles.

Research themes may include sustainable value creation, market formation, ecosystem dynamics, governance arrangements, power relations, technology roles in resource tensions, and how firms and other actors develop circular strategies under regulatory change and uncertainty. Possible empirical angles include second-life battery use for energy storage versus recycling materials back into production.

Methodological approaches can include qualitative case studies, optimization models, system dynamics modelling, and agent-based modelling. Candidates are encouraged to define their own research questions, theoretical perspective, empirical focus, and methods in dialogue with the supervisory team.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree and thesis; the master’s degree should normally be 120 ECTS with a 30 ECTS thesis and an average grade of B. Relevant backgrounds include business and management, innovation studies, energy systems, industrial ecology, system dynamics, systems modelling, sustainability transitions, science and technology studies, engineering, and related interdisciplinary fields. Admission to INN’s PhD programme in Innovation in Services in the Public and Private Sectors (INSEPP) is required. English proficiency is required; Scandinavian language skills are a strong merit. Experience in Nordic industry/practice contexts, ICT software for research, and post-master’s research experience are advantages.

Funding: the position is a paid PhD fellowship, placed in government salary scale position code 1017, with Norwegian Public Service Pension membership and associated pension and insurance schemes.

How to apply: submit the application electronically with a 5–7 page project proposal and progress plan, application letter, CV, relevant work, certified transcripts and diplomas, contact details for at least two referees, and a PDF copy of the master’s thesis. Attachments must be uploaded separately and all materials must be submitted before the deadline.

Deadline: 12 November 2026.
