About this position

Two fully funded PhD positions are available in the School of Mechanical, Medical and Process Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia. These positions focus on fluid transport processes in porous media, a field with significant implications for carbon geosequestration, hydrogen subsurface storage, fuel cells, and microfluidic device applications. The research is supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and supervised by Dr Zhongzheng Wang, a recognised researcher with extensive funding and impactful publications.

Successful applicants will join the Faculty of Engineering and benefit from access to advanced microfluidic fabrication facilities and high performance computing (HPC) resources at QUT. The projects involve addressing multiphase flow challenges during cyclic injection processes using microfluidic experiments and pore-scale modelling, as well as developing efficient pore-network modelling algorithms for simulating fluid transport coupled with chemical reactions. Validation against microfluidic experiments and application to reactive transport scenarios are key components of the research.

The scholarship package includes a tax-free living allowance of $33,637 per annum for three years (indexed annually), with a possible six-month extension subject to approval. Tuition fees are fully offset for up to four years, and international students receive Overseas Student Healthcare Cover (Single only) for the duration of their doctoral studies.

Applicants must meet QUT's Doctor of Philosophy entry requirements, including English language proficiency. Essential qualifications include a bachelor (honours) or master degree by research in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, applied physics, or related disciplines. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge in porous media flow, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), pore-network modelling, lattice Boltzmann method, microfluidic fabrication and experiments, 3D printing, or machine learning, and possess programming skills in Matlab, C++, or Python. Desired attributes include independent research ability, problem-solving skills, and a track record of academic publications.

Doctoral students are expected to participate in research projects, group meetings, and disseminate their findings through reports, conferences, and journal publications. Teaching and departmental duties may also be included, and students are encouraged to develop their own research ideas.

To apply, email Dr Zhongzheng Wang with a cover letter addressing eligibility and research interests, a CV, degree certificate, English results, and other relevant documents. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed, and successful applicants will submit an expression of interest (EOI) nominating Dr Wang as supervisor and referencing the scholarship web page in the Financial Details section. The application deadline is December 31, 2026.
