About this position
PhD opportunity at Aalborg University, Denmark in climate change, Arctic ecosystems, terrestrial ecology, biogeochemistry, and ecosystem modeling.
The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience at Aalborg University is advertising a 3-year PhD stipend in the project “From Catchment to Coast”, titled “Predicting terrestrial ecosystem responses to changing Arctic catchments.” The project investigates how climate warming alters terrestrial ecosystem structure and biogeochemical processes, and how these changes affect downstream freshwater and marine environments.
Research topics include changes in temperature, precipitation, snow cover, soil moisture, and seasonality; responses of vegetation, invertebrates, soils, and microbial communities; and impacts on carbon and nutrient cycling across a climate gradient in Greenland. Methods may include automated weather station data, vegetation and invertebrate observations, soil measurements, DNA barcoding, drones, and automated imagery/video systems.
The position is part of a collaboration between Aalborg University, Aarhus University, and the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources. The project seeks three PhD students who will define their PhD science program with their supervisors and participate in field campaigns in South Greenland, with time spent at the participating institutions.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant master’s degree in biology is required; field experience, data analysis, and programming skills (R, Python, MATLAB, etc.) are preferred; strong English communication skills are mandatory. The PhD student must enroll in the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science, complete 30 ECTS of PhD courses, contribute to teaching or dissemination, and undertake an external research stay outside Aalborg University, preferably 3–6 months at a foreign research institution.
How to apply: submit an application, CV, 1–2 page project description, diplomas with grades, and other relevant documents through Aalborg University’s recruitment system. Contact Associate Professor Simon Bahrndorff for questions about the position.
