About this position

Postdoc opportunity at the University of Copenhagen in shrub expansion and ecosystem responses in subarctic tundra.

This 2-year postdoctoral fellowship is based in the Terrestrial Ecology Section, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, and is part of a project on how shrubs drive ecosystem change in the Subarctic. The research focuses on plant ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental change, nitrogen cycling, carbon sequestration, and stable isotopes.

The project investigates long-term experimental warming in subarctic tundra heath ecosystems, including shrub biomass and nitrogen pools, primary and secondary growth, and shrub nitrogen uptake in spring and summer. Work combines field sampling, laboratory analyses, plant trait measurements, isotope labelling, and biogeochemical analyses. Field visits will take place near Abisko, Northern Sweden, with collaboration with Associate Research Professor Matteo Campioli at the University of Antwerpen.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in plant ecology, biology, biogeochemistry, or a related field; strong field and lab experience; data analysis/statistics skills; fluent written and spoken English; excellent publication record; and interest in stable isotopes and ecosystem responses to climate change.

Funding and terms: 2-year postdoc appointment. Salary, pension, and employment conditions follow the Danish agreement framework, with possible qualification-based supplement.

Application window: deadline is 1 November 2026 at 23:59 GMT+1. Apply online through the University of Copenhagen job portal and include a cover letter, CV, PhD documentation, three relevant papers, thesis, and up to two reference letters.
