About this position

The Biozentrum at the University of Basel is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in the research group of Prof. Marek Basler. The project focuses on the function and regulation of the bacterial Type 6 secretion system (T6SS), a large dynamic contractile nanomachine used by Gram-negative bacteria to deliver proteins across membranes and interact with neighboring bacterial or eukaryotic cells.

This PhD project sits at the intersection of molecular microbiology, protein biochemistry, bacterial cell biology, and related areas such as protein-protein interactions, bacterial signaling, imaging, and infection biology. The central scientific goal is to understand how T6SS assembly is controlled, how it is spatially positioned within bacterial cells, and how the timing of firing is regulated in response to environmental or cellular signals. The project builds on recent discoveries showing that T6SS localization and activation can depend on cell-contact sites, membrane damage sensing, and host-associated conditions, but the precise mechanisms remain unknown.

The successful candidate will join a highly interactive, multidisciplinary, and international research environment at one of the world’s leading life sciences institutes. The Biozentrum offers strong support through specialized core facilities in imaging, biophysics, and electron microscopy, together with a structured PhD program and broad opportunities for training, scientific exchange, and networking.

Eligibility highlights include an MSc degree with a research thesis in molecular microbiology, protein biochemistry, protein-protein interactions, electron microscopy, bacterial signaling, or a related discipline. Prior practical experience with live-cell imaging is considered an advantage. The position is based in Basel, Switzerland, a highly international city at the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany, and France.
