About this position
PhD student in bio-based battery electrolytes at Uppsala University, Sweden. The Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory is recruiting for a doctoral project in the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre, focused on sustainable energy storage, bio-based electrolytes, lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, electrochemistry, and materials characterization.
The project aims to develop bio-based electrolytes from renewable carbon feedstocks to improve battery safety, reduce climate impact, and lower dependence on fossil and externally sourced raw materials. Research will combine electrolyte design, battery assembly, electrochemical testing, and advanced characterization of electrode-electrolyte interfaces. Methods mentioned include galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy.
The position is a full-time temporary PhD employment (100%) with teaching possible up to 20% of working hours. The work will be carried out at Uppsala University in close collaboration with the project team and colleagues at the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre, with opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
Eligibility requires a second-cycle degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related subject, or equivalent qualifications. Applicants should have a good working knowledge of battery energy storage systems, experimental laboratory experience, strong academic writing skills, clear communication, careful documentation, teamwork ability, and very good English. Helpful extras include prior battery research, materials characterization, organic chemistry, data curation, electronic lab notebooks, Python, and strong grades.
Application materials include a CV, degree certificates and transcripts, a Master's thesis or equivalent, two references, and any other supporting documents. Apply through Uppsala University's recruitment system by 16 October 2026. Contact Andy Naylor at [email protected] for further information.
