About this position
Join the IBS/IRIG Institute at the Grenoble Interdisciplinary Institute (CEA) as a PhD student and contribute to the ERC Project “EnLightEn,” which aims to unravel the molecular basis of methanogenesis and methanotrophy in non-isolated anaerobic archaea. This three-year fixed-term position is hosted within the Microbial Metabolism team, offering a unique opportunity to investigate enzymatic chemistry in microbial anaerobic carbon cycling.
The research focuses on extracting native proteins involved in catabolic processes, purifying them using oxygen-free methods, and characterizing them with biochemical, biophysical, and structural tools. You will develop reaction assays to confirm and quantify enzymatic activity, analyze data to elucidate reaction mechanisms, and present your findings in scientific articles. The project’s unconventional approach circumvents the challenges of microbial isolation, enabling a deeper understanding of native enzyme mechanisms and their applications in industrial chemistry.
EnLightEn is pioneering a new field of research to characterize functional dark matter in microbial metabolism, offering unprecedented insights into the molecular tricks employed by the microbial world. The ideal candidate is a protein biochemist with a strong background in chemistry and a passion for exploring life’s catalysts. Experience in purifying native proteins, setting up enzymatic assays, and protein biophysical/biochemical characterization is preferred. Skills in anaerobic handling, analyses of enzymatic reaction mechanisms, and structural biology will be prioritized. Fluency in English and scientific rigour are essential.
By joining the Grenoble Interdisciplinary Institute, you will be part of a dynamic and innovative research environment dedicated to topics of significant societal importance. The institute offers training to enhance your skills, a staff committee with social, cultural, and sporting benefits, practical advantages such as meal vouchers and coverage of transport costs, and an exceptional living environment in Grenoble, nestled in the mountains.
The CEA is committed to the integration of people with disabilities and offers adjustments and organizational arrangements to facilitate inclusion. The position is open to everyone, and you will have the opportunity to learn, grow, and play a key role within a center of excellence.
Apply now to be part of this exciting research adventure and put your energy to work for innovation!
