About this position
The International Institute of Molecular Mechanisms and Machines (IMol), Polish Academy of Sciences, is recruiting a PhD student for the SonataBis project in the Laboratory of Metabolic Quality Control under the supervision of Dr Karolina Szczepanowska.
This position is based in Warsaw, Poland, and focuses on cell and molecular biology with a strong emphasis on mitochondrial dysfunction, metabolic stress, and the role of boosted proline biosynthesis in mammalian cells. The project aims to reveal how cells reshape metabolism in response to disease-associated stress and to better understand mechanisms underlying mitochondrial diseases. The work combines proteomics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and tailored cell culture models relevant to neuronal and muscle biology.
The research environment is described as young, collaborative, dynamic, and interdisciplinary, with access to state-of-the-art research equipment. This is a full-time, temporary PhD opening, offering the chance to develop an ambitious project with potential translational applications and to gain advanced experimental skills.
Funding: the selected candidate will receive a PhD fellowship for up to 4 years, with a take-home salary of approximately 4800–5500 net PLN per month, plus private medical care and social benefits.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold or be completing an MSc project in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related area. Strong knowledge of cell biology and biochemistry is expected, and previous practical laboratory experience is required. Good English and communication skills are essential; experience with mammalian cell culture is an advantage.
Application: submit the required documents in English via the online form. The initial application consists of a cover letter, CV, and contact details for two senior scientists. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed remotely, and the successful candidate will later need to provide degree and transcript documents plus a reference letter from the MSc supervisor before joining the Doctoral School.
Deadline: 15 November 2026, 23:59 Europe/Warsaw.
