About this position
Linköping University is recruiting a PhD student in Mixed Ionic–Electronic Materials for Thermal Energy Harvesting at the Department of Science and Technology, Campus Norrköping, Sweden.
The position is part of the ERC Starting Grant project HEAT-BRIDGE (High-Efficiency Thermal Energy Harvesting via Ionic Thermoelectric–Electronic Bridging), which aims to convert low-grade heat into electricity using new approaches that combine ionic thermoelectrics, electrochemistry, mixed ionic–electronic materials, and soft electronics.
The doctoral researcher will work on development and characterization of soft MIEC materials and separator materials, study electronic and ionic transport and structure–property relationships, and integrate materials into soft, deformable thermal energy-harvesting devices. The project also includes device fabrication, validation under realistic low-grade heat sources, and analysis/publishing of experimental results.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent advanced coursework. Required experience includes knowledge of electronic and/or ionic transport in functional materials, experimental materials preparation, device fabrication and/or physical characterization, and strong English skills. Experience with mixed ionic–electronic conductors, conducting polymers, carbon-based materials, polymer composites, membranes, separators, thermoelectric devices, and flexible electronics is advantageous.
The successful candidate will be supervised by Asst. Prof. Nara Kim at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE), a large international research environment at Linköping University with expertise in materials synthesis, characterization, device fabrication, printing, and additive manufacturing. The position is a paid doctoral employment, normally for four years full-time, with possible extension up to five years. The starting salary is SEK 35,300 per month, plus standard employment benefits.

What's required
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering, or another closely related field, or equivalent knowledge corresponding to at least 240 credits with at least 60 advanced credits relevant to the position.
