About this position

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland is advertising a PhD Student in Materials Science within the Applied Materials Group in the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and Imaging.

The project focuses on the texture of additively manufactured lightweight alloys, using wavelength-resolved neutron imaging and related experimental methods to connect crystallographic texture with mechanical properties. The successful candidate will develop and apply a texture tomography inverse problem to reconstruct the crystallographic texture of AM components, conduct neutron imaging and diffraction experiments, and validate results with electron microscopy and mechanical testing.

This opportunity is especially relevant for students interested in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, additive manufacturing, neutron imaging, diffraction, inverse problems, and data analysis. Programming skills such as Python are an asset, as are experience with metal additive manufacturing and neutron or X-ray diffraction/imaging techniques.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field, have strong motivation for experimental work, excellent communication skills, and excellent English. PSI highlights its interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment, systematic training on the job, personal development opportunities, and modern employment conditions.

The application deadline is 5 November 2026. Apply online via the PSI Refline portal and include a list of publications and referee addresses. For further information, contact Dr Florencia Malamud at [email protected].
