About this position
Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), specifically the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology, is advertising a PhD Student (f/m/d) position in Metallurgical Extraction of Critical Raw Materials from Future Electronic Devices Towards Responsible Electronics.
The project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and environmental science, with a strong focus on hydrometallurgy, pyro-hydrometallurgical processes, circular economy, and the recovery of critical raw materials from future electronic devices. The work includes identifying and isolating advanced technology metals/materials, developing and optimizing sustainable extraction processes, studying leaching phenomena and impurity behavior, and supporting collaboration within the DFG excellence cluster Rec2.
Applicants should have completed a Master’s/Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Process Metallurgy, Chemistry, Process Engineering, Applied Sciences, or a related field. Experience in experimental solution chemistry at lab or pilot scale is highly desirable, along with knowledge of aqueous chemistry speciation, thermodynamics software (e.g., HSC, FactSage), and characterization methods such as XRD, XRF, SEM-EDS, Raman, FTIR, ICP-MS/OES, or AAS. Strong English skills are required; German is an advantage.
The position is based in Freiberg, Germany, runs for 36 months, and offers salary and social benefits under TVöD-Bund, including possible classification up to EG 13, 30 days of paid leave, a company pension scheme, flexible working, and other employee benefits.
Deadline: 14 August 2026. Apply via the online application system with your cover letter, CV, and transcripts/diplomas.
