About this position
PhD Student position at the International Centre for Translational Eye Research (ICTER), Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, in Warsaw, Poland.
The project sits at the intersection of neuroscience, biology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, and biomedical engineering, with a strong translational focus on retinal gene delivery and vision restoration. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team developing a new gene-delivery strategy targeting retinal bipolar cells, including design and testing of genetic constructs, molecular validation, cell-based experiments, and production/characterization of genetically engineered viral vectors and pseudotyped viral particles.
Key tasks include cloning DNA constructs, PCR/sequencing/expression analysis, cell culture, in vitro testing of construct selectivity, optimization of cloning workflows, documentation of results, and presenting findings at conferences. The broader ICTER agenda aims to develop safer and more effective surgical interventions, new therapies for eye diseases, and diagnostic methods to improve prognosis and restore vision.
Eligibility highlights: MSc degree or equivalent in molecular biology, biotechnology, genetic engineering, or a related field; practical experience in molecular cloning and DNA construct preparation; cell culture and standard molecular biology skills; English proficiency; and PhD student status or commitment to external PhD studies. Experience with viral vectors or recombinant protein expression is an advantage, and documented eye-research experience is valued.
Funding: part-time temporary employment at 0.5 FTE with a salary of 3850 gross/month (proportionally adjusted if FTE is lower). Application deadline: 21 August 2026, 12:00 (Europe/Warsaw). Apply by email with CV, cover letter, MSc diploma copy, and proof of PhD school attendance or declaration for external PhD studies, quoting reference R_18/2026_ICTER.
