About this position

FAroGels is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network funded under Horizon Europe, focused on food-grade, bio-based, and biodegradable aerogels for sustainable food systems. This PhD position, DC13, is hosted by AGH University of Krakow in Poland and is centered on developing hybrid electrospun fiber–aerogel systems for innovative food solutions, especially packaging-relevant applications.

The project combines nanofibrous mats with biopolymer aerogels to create materials with controlled architecture, high porosity, mechanical stability, and enhanced functionality. The doctoral research will explore food-grade polymers processed by electrospinning, optimization of key parameters such as voltage, flow rate, tip-to-collector distance, and humidity, and integration with aerogel matrices. The resulting systems will be characterized using techniques including SEM and FTIR, while performance testing will assess mechanical behavior, water vapor transmission rate, oxygen permeability, and controlled release of bioactive compounds.

The broader FAroGels network brings together academic and non-academic partners with expertise in food science and technology, materials science, biopolymer science, biotechnology, process engineering, analytical characterization, packaging, and sustainable innovation. The position includes laboratory-based research, data analysis, scientific communication, and close collaboration with other doctoral candidates, supervisors, and partner organizations.

Funding is provided for 36 months through the MSCA Doctoral Network. The monthly package includes a living allowance of EUR 4,010 (adjusted by the country correction coefficient), a mobility allowance of EUR 710, and a family allowance of EUR 660 if applicable. The appointment is a full-time fixed-term doctoral position with social-security coverage and other employment-related benefits according to MSCA and institutional rules.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as chemistry, materials science, food technology, or chemical engineering. Strong electrospinning and polymer chemistry skills, English proficiency, and the ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary research setting are emphasized. The application deadline is 9 December 2026 at 23:59 (CET/Warsaw time), with interviews planned for January 2027 and an expected start in March 2027.

Applications are submitted by email to [email protected], with “PhD FAroGels” in the subject line. Required documents include a CV, motivation letter, diplomas/transcripts or proof of imminent graduation, referee contacts and letters, and proof of English proficiency if required. A separate PhD admission/enrolment process at AGH University of Krakow may also apply.
