About this position
EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) is advertising a PhD student position in fabrication and characterization of plasmonic crystals for solar energy within the research group SCI-ENAC-AS: Nanotechnology for Solar Energy Conversion led by Prof. Andreas Schüler.
The project is part of the SNSF project “Coupled oscillations in plasmonic crystals” and focuses on coupling effects in plasmonic oscillations in metallic micro-/nanostructures. The research aims to explore plasmonic crystals with broad frequency bands of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) in the UV-VIS-NIR range, with potential relevance to photovoltaics, flat screens, flexible displays, energy-efficient OLED lighting, electrochromic devices, and insulating glazing.
Applicants should have an excellent Master’s-level degree in Micro-/Nanotechnology, Physics, Materials Science, Energy, or a related quantitative field. Desired experience includes reactive magnetron sputtering, electron-beam lithography, UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometry, ultra-high vacuum STM, and/or photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS, UPS). Strong interest in micro-/nanostructures, optical and electronic material properties, plasmonics, and solar energy is expected, along with proficiency in English (French is a plus).
The position offers an international research environment, intensive supervision, and financial support according to EPFL doctoral student conditions. The contract is a 1-year fixed-term appointment, renewable up to 4 years, with the goal of completing the PhD. Successful candidates must also enroll in one of EPFL’s doctoral school programs (EDEY, EDCE, EDMX, or EDPY).
Deadline: 2026-11-30. Start date: May 1, 2027 (alternative start date may be agreed). How to apply: submit the application via the EPFL job opportunities webpage with CV, motivation letter, diplomas, and transcripts/grades. Only online applications are considered.
