About this position

PhD Student Position in Physical Activity and Cardiopulmonary Fitness After Childhood Cancer at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), University of Bern, in collaboration with the University Children's Hospital Bern Inselspital, Switzerland.

The project studies physical activity patterns, exercise capacity, and determinants of physical limitation in children and adolescents after cancer. The cohort follows survivors from three Swiss university hospitals and uses accelerometry, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, functional assessments, and clinical/questionnaire data.

This is a 3-year, 100% PhD position starting as soon as possible. The role involves coordinating a multicentre prospective cohort study in Bern, Basel, and Geneva; working with paediatric oncologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, exercise physiologists, and study nurses; integrating clinical, treatment-related, physiological, and behavioural data; and applying epidemiological research, data management, and statistical analysis skills. Results are expected to be presented at conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants should have a university degree, ideally an MD, or a background in sports sciences, physiotherapy, or physiology. Strong interest in paediatric oncology, exercise physiology, epidemiological research, and biostatistics is important; clinical experience and data analysis experience are preferred. Fluency in English and German and/or French is expected, ideally all three.

Funding is provided at Swiss National Science Foundation salary scales. To apply, send a CV and motivation letter to [email protected] and [email protected] by 2026-08-15.
