About this position

PhD Studentship in the Biochemistry and Chemical Biology of the Genome and Epigenome at the University of Cambridge, Department of Chemistry.

This funded PhD project is offered in Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian’s group and focuses on biochemistry, chemical biology, genomics, molecular biology, biophysics, and structural biology. The research explores fundamental mechanisms of genome function, with a strong emphasis on DNA secondary structures such as G-quadruplexes (G4s), chromatin regulation, and the development of small-molecule and bifunctional strategies to probe genome biology and therapeutic mechanisms.

Projects may involve mapping where small molecules bind to DNA and chromatin, identifying associated proteins, and studying interactions with DNA, RNA, and chromatin-associated proteins. The work is based primarily in the Balasubramanian lab at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, with collaborative interactions with the sister lab at the CRUK Cambridge Institute.

Funding: 4-year studentship with a maintenance grant and tuition fees at the UK rate. Outstanding overseas applicants may be considered if they secure a suitable scholarship.

Eligibility: Applicants should be highly motivated, capable of independent thought, and able to communicate and collaborate effectively. A strong background in biochemistry, chemistry, and/or molecular biology is preferred, and knowledge of genomics plus nucleic-acid chemical biology is highly desirable.

Application: Email a cover letter, CV, detailed academic transcripts, and the contact details of two academic referees to Jo Lockhart at [email protected]. Use the subject line PhD – October 2027. The studentship commences in October 2027.
