About this position
PhD studentship at Newcastle University in cardiovascular development, focused on pharyngeal endoderm transcriptional networks regulating aortic arch artery development and malformation. The project addresses the molecular basis of congenital cardiovascular malformations, a major cause of infant morbidity and mortality.
The research will combine single-nucleus RNA sequencing, spatial gene expression analysis, molecular biology, cell culture, imaging, and molecular genetics. The student will work with novel mouse-model datasets to identify transcriptional networks, signalling pathways, cell-cell communication pathways, and gene regulatory networks involved in normal and abnormal artery formation. Findings will be validated in developing embryos and mechanistically studied in an epithelial cell model.
Supervisors: Dr. Simon Bamforth, Dr. Helen Phillips, and Dr. Stephen White at the Newcastle University Biosciences Institute.
Funding: 100% of home tuition fees, annual stipend starting at £21,114, plus research costs and travel to conferences. International candidates may need to pay the fee difference above the home rate.
Eligibility: at least a 2:1 Honours degree in biology, genetics, biomedicine, or a related area; willingness to learn bioinformatics; an MRes or similar qualification is advantageous. Non-native English speakers need IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 minimum in each subsection.
