About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of Surrey in pericytes, exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH), microvascular dysfunction, and disease progression.
This project sits at the cutting edge of equine biomedical research and aims to improve understanding of EIPH, a condition that affects racehorse welfare and performance. The research will investigate the role of pericytes in the initiation and progression of disease, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets and strategies. The project has a strong molecular, cellular, and bioinformatic focus and includes training in 3D cell culture models, multi-omics, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, advanced imaging, molecular biology, and related techniques.
Supervisors: Dr Susan Armstrong, Prof Kamalan Jeevaratnam, and Dr Paola Campagnolo at the University of Surrey, United Kingdom.
Eligibility: open to UK and EU eligible candidates. Applicants should meet the minimum entry requirements for the PhD programme. A degree in a related discipline is expected; medical and veterinary graduates are encouraged to apply. A Master’s degree in a related subject is desirable, and prior laboratory experience with some statistical methodology is also desirable.
Funding: fees for UK or EU eligible candidates are covered. The stipend for year 1 is above standard UKRI level, with £24,400 for non-vets and £30,100 for veterinary graduates.
Deadline: 15 September 2026. Start date is planned for January 2027, with later start dates possible.
How to apply: submit an application through the Veterinary Medicine and Science PhD programme page. Instead of a research proposal, upload a document stating the project title and the relevant supervisor name. You may contact the supervisors by email to discuss the project informally before applying.
