About this position
University of Cambridge is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the molecular and cellular biology of mitochondrial disease models. The post sits within the research groups of Prof Patrick Chinnery, Prof Rita Horvath, and Dr Jelle van den Ameele at the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and the John Van Geest Brain Repair Centre on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
The project is part of a collaborative Wellcome Discovery Award and focuses on characterising novel cellular models of mitochondrial disease, identifying nuclear modifiers of disease progression, and understanding how nuclear and mitochondrial DNA defects lead to tissue-specific clinical presentations. The work combines cell biology, neurogenetics, RNA sequencing, broader omics approaches, and functional studies in neuronal and muscle stem cells and human organoids.
Applicants should have a PhD or be close to obtaining one. The role is suited to independent, highly motivated researchers who want to work collaboratively with wet-lab and computational scientists. Experience or interest in bioinformatics, rare neurological disease research, mitochondrial biology, and translational work with clinical samples is relevant. The post also offers opportunities for training, career development, and supervision of junior researchers.
The position is fixed-term until 30 September 2028 in the first instance. Salary is £37,694-£46,049. The university states that if the PhD has been submitted but not yet awarded, the successful candidate may initially be appointed as a Research Assistant and move to Research Associate once the PhD is confirmed.
To apply, use the university’s online recruitment system, upload a covering letter and CV, and include referee details with email address and phone number. Quote reference RR50158 in your application and correspondence.
