About this position

The Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research (CTR) at the University of Cambridge is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in placental biology and reproductive science. The centre brings together more than 30 Principal Investigators working on the placenta, early development, and maternal-fetal interactions during pregnancy.

Students will be based in the relevant Cambridge department or institute and will benefit from a dynamic training environment, seminars, annual Away Days, interdisciplinary events through Cambridge Reproduction, and specialist training such as the Placental Biology Course. The programme also connects students to the Postgraduate School of the Life Sciences and opportunities to attend international meetings.

Available research projects for the 2026/2027 cycle include: endometrial-trophoblast interactions in placental invasion, epigenetic mechanisms linking maternal choline supply and one-carbon metabolism, GLP-1 receptor agonists and placental/maternal vascular effects in obesity, imaging human implantation, and transcription factors in trophectoderm specification during human embryogenesis.

Funding covers all University and College fees at home or international rates, a stipend of £22,000 per year, £15,000 for justified research consumables/equipment, and up to £750 for conference travel. The studentship is available for full-time study over four years or part-time over five years.

Applicants should have at least a UK Good II.i Honours Degree or an international equivalent, with a strong academic record, relevant research experience, and achievements. Candidates are asked to identify a project and contact potential supervisors before submitting a formal application.

The application deadline is 3 November 2026. Shortlisted candidates will proceed through interview rounds in late November 2026 and early January 2027.
