About this position

Cotutelle PhD opportunity at Coventry University in collaboration with Stellenbosch University for a project on PEM fuel cells, electrochemistry, durability, and scale-transfer modelling.

The project is titled “Accelerating the PEM fuel cell development cycle by predicting large-format stack performance and durability from subscale membrane electrode assembly testing.” It focuses on predicting 250 cm² stack-relevant performance from smaller cell tests (12 cm², 45 cm², and 250 cm²), with attention to reactant distribution, pressure drop, compression, thermal gradients, flow-field architecture, and water management.

Research activities include literature review, MEA fabrication and testing, polarisation curves, high-frequency resistance, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, oxygen/air diagnostics, limiting-current measurements, pressure/humidity/stoichiometry tests, accelerated stress testing, and development of a reduced-order or physics-informed model.

The studentship is based primarily at Coventry University’s hydrogen research group, with a 3-month research stay at Stellenbosch University in Year 2 to assess reproducibility across laboratories.

Funding includes tuition fees and a bursary. The post is full-time for 3 to 3.5 years.

Eligibility includes UK/International applicants, including EU graduates, who meet the academic entry requirements: a relevant first degree (2:1 or equivalent with specified marks) and/or a relevant master’s degree with merit-level performance, plus minimum English language proficiency.

Relevant backgrounds include Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Energy Systems, or closely related disciplines. Experience with fuel cells, electrochemical testing, data analysis, modelling, or experimental engineering is advantageous.
