About this position

PhD opportunity at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, in collaboration with the University of Bath and Diamond Light Source.

The project investigates CO₂ capture by coupling X-ray Raman scattering and optical Raman spectroscopy to study how atmospheric carbon dioxide interacts with amine-based materials. The research combines advanced synchrotron techniques with computational electronic structure calculations to reveal binding mechanisms and degradation pathways that are not accessible with conventional characterization methods.

You will join Beamline ID20 at ESRF and gain experience in spectroscopy, material synthesis, carbon capture testing, and spatially resolved X-ray imaging through secondments to the University of Bath and Diamond Light Source’s I08 SXM beamline. The work is strongly interdisciplinary, bringing together chemistry, materials science, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, and computational methods.

This is a funded three-year PhD project starting on 04 January 2027. The position is hosted at ESRF, with the successful candidate enrolled in the doctoral school at the University of Bath. The project is supervised by Dr Christoph Sahle (ESRF), Dr Luke Higgins (Diamond Light Source), and Dr Matthew E. Potter (University of Bath).

Eligibility highlights include a degree allowing PhD enrolment, preferably in chemistry, physics, or materials sciences; strong manual skills and attention to detail; proof of at least B2-level English; and compliance with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule. Candidates must not already hold a PhD or be enrolled in a doctoral degree.
