About this position

PhD thesis opportunity at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, in collaboration with the University of Bath and Diamond Light Source. The project focuses on improving understanding of atmospheric CO₂ capture by coupling X-ray Raman scattering with optical Raman spectroscopy and computational electronic structure calculations.

The research will investigate the electronic interactions between CO₂ and amine-based materials, with the aim of revealing binding mechanisms and degradation pathways that are difficult to observe with conventional characterization methods. The work is centered at ESRF Beamline ID20 and includes secondments to the University of Bath and to the soft X-ray imaging beamline I08 SXM at Diamond Light Source.

This is a funded three-year PhD project starting on 04 January 2027. The project offers an international environment and hands-on experience in material synthesis, carbon capture testing, and spatially resolved X-ray imaging, with a strong focus on spectroscopy, synchrotron science, and advanced materials characterization.

Supervision is provided by Dr Christoph Sahle (ESRF), Dr Luke Higgins (Diamond Light Source), and Dr Matthew E. Potter (University of Bath). The student will be enrolled in the doctoral school at the University of Bath, UK, while being hosted at ESRF in France.

Eligibility highlights include a degree enabling PhD enrolment (for example MSc or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline, plus manual skills, careful laboratory practice, and English proficiency at B2 level or above. The post also requires compliance with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule. Applicants must not already hold or be enrolled in a doctoral degree.
