About this position

Post-doctoral research position at the University of Innsbruck, Department of Psychology, in the Brain and Behavior Laboratory (Department of General Psychology II: Emotion and Motivation).

The project focuses on the affective neuroscience of touch and the neuroscience of social touch: how touch with humans, non-human animals, and artificial agents becomes rewarding, regulates emotion, and supports health and well-being. The lab combines psychological theory with neuroscientific and physiological methods to study somatosensory processing and its effects on affective, social, and homeostatic brain networks.

The successful candidate will work on topics such as human–human touch, human–animal interaction, and affective touch in technologically mediated contexts. Methods may include EEG, psychophysiology, advanced statistics, and potentially fMRI (the institute has its own MRI facilities). Technical and programming skills in Arduino, R, Matlab, or Python are especially welcome.

This is a post-doctoral position for an initial period of 3 years, with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 additional years depending on performance. The role also includes teaching two courses per semester and related research/teaching administration duties.

Eligibility highlights: strong background in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, affective science, biological psychology, or a related field; strong motivation; interest in new methodologies; and the ability to work carefully and collaboratively.

Location: Innsbruck, Austria. Deadline: 17 September 2026. Application link: the university careers portal page linked in the post.
