About this position

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is advertising a postdoctoral position in Iranian Jewish Studies at the Institute for Iranian Studies (IFI) in Vienna. This is a part-time temporary appointment (36 hours, 90%) in an internationally active research environment.

The position focuses on Persian Jewish history, Judeo-Persian text, and the study of material culture such as amulets and ritual objects. The successful candidate will work on translation and transliteration of Persian and Judeo-Persian sources, contribute to the analysis of objects and cultural materials, and develop an independent research project suitable for third-party funding.

In addition to research, the postdoc will contribute to the project website and produce scholarly outputs such as a book chapter and article. The role is therefore well suited to an early-career researcher with strong textual, linguistic, and cultural-historical expertise and an interest in minority histories in Iran and the wider Middle East.

Eligibility highlights: completed studies, preferably a doctorate in Iranian Studies or a related field; several years of experience in the history of minorities in Iran are desirable; excellent Persian and English are required.

Funding and salary: the minimum annual gross salary is EUR 70,167.44 full-time equivalent, with pro rata adjustment for the 90% contract. The post is not funded through an EU research framework programme.

Application deadline: 25 August 2026, 23:55 (Europe/Brussels). Applications are submitted online through the provided OeAW application portal.
