About this position

PostDoc in Chemistry at the National Institute of Research and Innovation, Riga, Latvia.

This postdoctoral position is offered within the Horizon 2020 BBCE project, the Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence, a collaborative research network involving Riga Technical University, the National Institute of Research and Innovation, Rīga Stradiņš University, the Institute of Stomatology, AO Research Institute Davos, and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

The successful candidate will join the BBCE Pre-clinical Biomaterial Evaluation Group and work on advanced biomaterials research with a strong focus on polymer synthesis, nanoparticle research, and biomaterials. The project specifically targets the development of nanoparticles with predictable interactions with biomolecules and the investigation of nanoparticle behaviour in biologically relevant environments, with particular emphasis on cancer therapy and diagnostics.

Key responsibilities include synthesis and characterization of small organic molecules, synthesis of polymers via controlled radical polymerization techniques, development and optimization of nanoparticle preparation protocols, and evaluation of the unique properties and functionalities of the resulting biomaterials. The role sits at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, pharmacology, and medicine, offering a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment.

The position includes a competitive basic salary of EUR 52,000 per year before tax, health insurance, and dedicated funding for training and mobility. It also offers sponsored training opportunities and training visits to AO Research Institute Davos in Switzerland and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany.

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials Science, Bioengineering, or a related field, and demonstrate strong expertise in organic synthesis, polymer synthesis and characterization, nanoparticle/materials physicochemical characterization, and an established scientific record in the relevant areas. Experience in polymer synthesis, nanoparticle research, and biomaterials will be advantageous.

The application deadline is 25 September 2026 at 17:00 (Europe/Riga). Applications must be submitted in English by email to [email protected] and should include a motivation letter, a CV in Europass format, a copy of the PhD diploma or equivalent, and contact details for two referees. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview, either in person or online.
