About this position

The University of Basel (Department of Environmental Sciences, research group Ecology) is recruiting a fully funded postdoc in ecological modelling focused on global change, mountain plant ecology, and species range shifts. The project will model the relaxation times of accrued lags of plant species across Europe’s mountain ranges using a spatially explicit dataset on species-specific shifts and lags over recent decades.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with team members and researchers from other institutions, co-supervise PhD and MSc students, and contribute to teaching and other research activities. The role is based in Basel, Switzerland, with an employment rate of 80–100% for 2 years, starting February–April 2027.

Eligibility and profile: applicants should hold a PhD in ecology, botany, biogeography, environmental science, computational biology, or a related field. Strong skills in statistical analysis and modelling (preferably in R) and experience with large databases are expected. Experience in mountain plant ecology or climate-change-driven range shifts is an asset. Excellent English, a proven track record, strong communication and organization skills, teamwork, and a collegial, inclusive attitude are essential.

Funding: the position is fully funded and includes internationally competitive salary and social benefits according to University of Basel rules.

How to apply: submit your application through the online recruiting platform. Required documents include a motivation letter (max. 2 pages), CV with publication list and citation numbers, copy of PhD degree (or a statement of expected completion), and contact details of 3 references. Reference letters are not required. Deadline: 2026-11-19.
