Dr. Daniel M. Griffith is recruiting a PhD student in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University, with affiliation to the Turkana Basin Institute. The project sits at the intersection of plant ecology, global change biology, evolution, biogeography, and remote sensing.

The lab studies how plants and plant communities respond to environmental change across open ecosystems such as grasslands, savannas, and drylands. Research interests include plant functional traits, evolutionary history, disturbance, species interactions, ecosystem distribution and function, and links between field measurements and imaging spectroscopy or other remote sensing data. Potential projects may examine responses to drought, grazing, and fire, trait and lineage variation along environmental gradients, or multi-scale analyses from individual plants to landscapes and regions.

Location: Stony Brook, New York, with fieldwork in East Africa (including the Turkana Basin and Serengeti) and North America.

Eligibility/preferences: Intellectual curiosity and motivation to build an independent research program are required. Previous research experience is strongly preferred. Helpful skills include field ecology, plant identification, ecophysiology, R/Python, GIS, remote sensing, and spectroscopy.

What's required
