About this position
TU Delft is recruiting a Postdoc in EMT Modelling of High-Voltage Components and Protection (UTOPYS) within the new national UTOPYS research infrastructure for real-time power system simulation.
The project focuses on electrical engineering, power systems, and electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation. You will develop and validate detailed EMT models of high-voltage components in RSCAD/RTDS, including lines and cables, transformers, breakers, reactive-power devices, HVDC and MTDC terminals, offshore connections, substations, protection, and measurement systems. The goal is to create open, modular, validated models and datasets that can be reused across the consortium and by external academic and industry users.
You will join the Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG) section in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at Delft University of Technology, working with TU Delft staff, PhD students, and partner institutes in the UTOPYS consortium. The postdoc will contribute to a large RTDS cluster at the ESP Lab and help reproduce faults, islanding, and cascading outages realistically.
Requirements include a PhD in electrical engineering, power systems, or a closely related field (obtained or near completion), strong EMT and power-system dynamics background, experience with at least one simulation package such as RSCAD/RTDS, PSCAD, EMTP, PowerFactory, Simulink/Simscape, OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL, pandapower, or PyPSA, plus good English and a structured, well-documented working style. Helpful extras include RTDS/hardware-in-the-loop experience, Python/C/scripting, version control, testing, converter control, HVDC/MTDC, protection, model validation, and large-scale network modelling.
Funding and conditions: 2-year temporary appointment, 36–40 hours per week, salary range €3706–€5760 under the Dutch Universities CLA, with pension, flexible working, leave hours, training, and other employment benefits.
Application deadline: 25 October 2026. Apply online with a CV including publications and a motivational letter. Address the application to Alex Neagu, Programme Manager UTOPYS.
