About this position

Postdoc opportunity in EMT transmission backbone and model integration (UTOPYS) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands.

This postdoc is part of UTOPYS (Understanding Large and Complex Power Systems), a ten-year national research infrastructure focused on real-time power system simulation. The project centers on a large RTDS cluster at TU Delft’s ESP Lab and aims to build an open, modular, validated library of electromagnetic transient (EMT) component models, reference system models, scenarios, and datasets.

The advertised role focuses on the transmission backbone of the UTOPYS Library and on model integration. You will design and build a scalable RSCAD/RTDS model of a large 380/220 kV transmission system, define library architecture and interfaces, coordinate integration workflows, and help ensure that models from multiple partners run reliably in a shared environment. The work is highly collaborative and includes technical leadership for integration sprints, review and merging of contributions, documentation, validation, model conversion, and open-access publication of models and datasets.

Research keywords: electrical engineering, power systems, EMT simulation, real-time simulation, RSCAD/RTDS, HVDC, grid modeling, model validation, model reduction, open science, power system dynamics.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in electrical engineering, power systems, or a closely related field (obtained or near completion); strong background in power system dynamics and EMT simulation; experience with at least one power system simulation package; good English; structured documentation; and experience coordinating technical work across a team or partners. Helpful extras include RTDS/RSCAD, hardware-in-the-loop, Python/C/scripting, version control, testing, converter control, HVDC/MTDC, protection, and large-scale network modelling.

Funding and conditions: 2-year temporary appointment, 36–40 hours per week, salary range €3706–€5760, plus Dutch university benefits including pension, flexible working, leave hours, training opportunities, and partially paid parental leave.

Application window: apply by 25 October 2026 through the online application button. Submit a CV with publications and a motivational letter. Email applications are not accepted.

What's required

Applicants should have a PhD in electrical engineering, power systems or a closely related field, obtained or close to completion. Required experience includes power system dynamics and electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation, and demonstrable use of at least one power system simulation package such as RSCAD/RTDS, PSCAD, EMTP, PowerFactory, Simulink/Simscape, OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL, pandapower or PyPSA. Candidates should work in a structured, well-documented way, be enthusiastic about teamwork and open science, have a good command of English, and have experience coordinating technical work across a team or partners. Assets include RTDS/RSCAD or hardware-in-the-loop experience, Python/C/scripting/version control/testing skills, expertise in converter control, HVDC/MTDC/offshore systems, protection, machine and load modelling, model order reduction, parameter estimation, validation, large-scale or synthetic network modelling, model conversion between tools, and teaching/training experience.

How to apply

Apply online via the application button no later than 25 October 2026. Upload a CV including publications and a motivational letter explaining your interest, fit, and preferred parts of the work. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed.
