About this position

Postdoc opportunity in computational biology, AI, and agentic software systems at VIB, Belgium.

The Laboratory of Causal Systems Immunology at the VIB Center for AI & Computational Biology is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to develop harness, swarm, and memory engineering for computational biology. The lab combines causal inference, probabilistic AI, and large-scale in vivo perturbation experiments to understand how genes shape immune-cell states and how the immune system responds to interventions.

This postdoc sits at the intersection of computational biology, machine learning, and software engineering. The successful candidate will oversee many computational biology tasks across disciplines, launch and monitor agent swarms, communicate with task experts, and help turn biological needs into new computational tasks. Working with wet-lab collaborators and the VIB.AI ML unit, the role also includes identifying and integrating validation data, maintaining a large codebase, and testing ideas that improve the harness, long-term memory, and swarming behaviour of the system.

The position offers an interdisciplinary environment spanning wet-lab, technology development, and computational teams, plus access to unpublished validation data, substantial local compute for running many language models, and direct interaction with a growing team of LLM engineers. The lab is embedded in both the VIB Center for AI & Computational Biology and the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research, with strong links to experimental immunology and inflammatory disease research.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD in computational biology, computer science, computer engineering, biostatistics, artificial intelligence, physics, or a related field; broad interest across biology; strong English skills; and enthusiasm for complex, agent-driven research problems.

The role is full-time and temporary, with a competitive salary and full benefits. The deadline is 30 October 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Brussels). Apply online via the VIB jobs portal and include a motivation letter, CV, and ideally referee contact details.
