About this position

DIIS (Danish Institute for International Studies) is recruiting a 3-year postdoc on maritime security in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The position is part of DIIS Maritime, an interdisciplinary research initiative focused on maritime security, geopolitical tension, hybrid threats at sea, and the operational conditions for shipping and maritime industries.

The postdoc will contribute to the Arctic work package and may be placed in either the Global Security and Worldviews unit or the Foreign Policy and Diplomacy unit, depending on the research profile. The project invites applicants to develop their own research proposal within the scope of climate change, geopolitical and geoeconomic tensions, and the changing maritime security environment in the Arctic and North Atlantic. Proposals on Russian perspectives on the maritime Arctic are especially welcome, including possible angles on Russian-Chinese cooperation, other state actors such as India or Japan, and industry/commercial interests.

Disciplinary approaches may include security studies, law, anthropology, or history. The postdoc is expected to combine academic output with policy-oriented dissemination, including written policy analysis and oral briefings for stakeholders in the maritime sector and relevant authorities in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.

Funding and terms: full-time, fixed-term 36 months. Salary is DKK 423,221 to 502,075 plus functional allowance and pension, with the possibility of a personal qualification supplement. DIIS also provides a budget for research stays and fieldwork.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD before the start date; English is required; a strong publication record, relevant methodological experience, and familiarity with the literature are expected.

Deadline: 5 October 2026 at 12:00/13:30 (as listed in the post). Applications must be submitted via DIIS’s electronic recruitment system.
