About this position
The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Law (CUHK LAW), is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for a research-intensive project in law, history, and international relations. The position focuses on the legal and political history of war crimes and crimes against humanity, with particular emphasis on the Sri Lankan Civil War and the broader question of statehood in international law.
The fellow will work under the direction of Professor Alex Green and in collaboration with the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam. The project aims to produce historical research, legal and policy briefs, and publishable scholarship on the legal challenges surrounding the creation of an independent Tamil State within Sri Lanka, using the framework developed in Professor Green’s 2024 Cambridge University Press monograph, Statehood as Political Community: International Law and the Emergence of New States.
This is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral appointment initially for six months, renewable by mutual agreement. The role is research-only and requires the appointee to work in person in Hong Kong; remote work will not be considered.
Applicants should hold a PhD in History or Public International Law (ideally with a Sri Lankan Civil War focus) and show strong academic capability in history or public international law. Fluency in English is required, and knowledge of Sinhala or Tamil is especially welcomed. The deadline is 18 October 2026, and the anticipated start date is 4 January 2027.
To apply, submit the required documents online via the CUHK career site: a detailed CV, complete publication list, one sample manuscript or publication, names of two referees with full contact information, and any other relevant supporting documents. For enquiries, contact Professor Alex Green at [email protected].
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
How to apply
Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
