About this position

3-year postdoc opportunity on surface subsidence above the Groningen gas field area, using InSAR observations and data assimilation.

The project is based at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, with close collaboration with Delft University of Technology. It is funded through the DeepNL program of the Dutch Research Council and focuses on developing physics-based models to quantify the physical processes driving subsidence.

The research combines Earth Science, Geology, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. Methods mentioned include data assimilation of InSAR, GNSS, geodetic leveling time series, and extensometer observations. The models are intended for forecasting the consequences of reservoir compaction, waterboard management decisions, land use, and climate change.

The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic and communicative postdoctoral scientist with a strong background in data science, scientific methods, algorithms, and systems for extracting knowledge from structured and unstructured data. A background in physical sciences such as seismology or geodesy is expected. Candidates with 0-4 years of experience post-PhD are particularly well suited.

Supervisors and collaborators mentioned include Dr Rob Govers (Utrecht University), Ramon Hansen (Delft University of Technology), Esther Stouthamer (Utrecht University), and Femke Vossepoel (Delft University of Technology).

For more information, contact Dr Rob Govers at [email protected]. The preferred start date is as soon as possible.
