About this position

PostDoc in Multilayer Meta-Optics for High-Performance Optical Systems at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Netherlands.

This postdoctoral project focuses on pushing meta-optics beyond the limits of single-layer metasurfaces by combining computational design, nanofabrication, and optical experiments. The research is motivated by demanding applications in semiconductor metrology, advanced microscopy, spectroscopy, and sensing, where modern optical systems need broadband operation, high efficiency, precise wavefront control, and compact form factors.

You will work on multilayer and hybrid meta-optics, including stacked nanostructured layers and co-design with refractive optics. The project involves full-wave simulations, computational optimization, inverse design, and use of tools such as Zemax. On the fabrication side, you will develop multilayer devices using electron-beam lithography, thin-film deposition, and reactive-ion etching, addressing overlay, alignment, stacking, and process reproducibility. You will also help build broadband optical experiments for characterization, fiber-optic alignment, and coupling between free-space, fiber, and integrated photonic systems.

The position is part of Heliopyxis, a collaboration between TU/e, the University of Twente, and industrial partners including ASML, SCIL Nanoimprint Solutions, and ALUVIA Photonics. The work is hosted in the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) group within the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education, with access to advanced nanofabrication and optical characterization facilities. The group environment is interdisciplinary and collaborative, with opportunities to mentor BSc and MSc students and help shape the direction of the project.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Nanotechnology, or a related field; background in nanophotonics, meta-optics, or integrated photonics; hands-on photonic nanofabrication experience; strong optical experimental skills; and familiarity with electromagnetic modeling and simulation. Experience with nanoimprint lithography, two-photon polymerization, optimization, inverse design, quantum optics, or nonlinear optics is welcome. Excellent English and strong communication skills are expected.

Funding and appointment: full-time employment for 1 year with a possibility of extension. Salary is according to Dutch university scale 10, from €4,422 to €5,760 gross base salary per month, plus an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus. Additional benefits include pension participation, training opportunities, and various employee support schemes.

A PhD in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Nanotechnology, or a related field, with a background in nanophotonics, meta-optics, or integrated photonics. Hands-on experience with nanofabrication of photonic devices, especially electron-beam lithography, thin-film deposition, reactive-ion etching, multilayer processing, overlay, or stacking, is required; experience with nanoimprint lithography or two-photon polymerization (2PP) is an advantage. Strong experimental skills in optical characterization and alignment are expected, with experience in fiber-optic alignment and coupling to photonic devices highly valued. Experience with electromagnetic modeling and simulation (e.g. Lumerical, COMSOL, Tidy3D, or equivalent) is required, and optimization or inverse design is appreciated. A background in theoretical or experimental quantum optics or nonlinear optics is a plus. Excellent written and verbal English, good communication and leadership skills, ability to manage complex projects, and willingness to coach PhD and MSc students are required.
