About this position

This PhD project explores phase transitions for optical information processing, with a focus on how critical phenomena can reduce optical energy consumption while balancing speed and accuracy. The project will study a laser-driven optical cavity containing a perovskite crystal, building on recent work from the host group. You will characterize spectral and temporal response near the transition, investigate memory effects and fluctuations, and test benchmark optical information-processing operations using controlled time-dependent signals. The work is primarily experimental and includes optical cavity measurements, materials characterization, and possibly nanofabrication, supported by theoretical modelling, statistical analysis, and numerical simulations.

The position is hosted by the Interacting Photons group led by Prof. Said R. K. Rodriguez at AMOLF, with part-time work at Utrecht University in the group of Prof. Allard Mosk. The appointment is full-time for four years and includes teaching contributions at Utrecht University and participation in training programs.

Eligibility: MSc degree in physics, optics, photonics, nanoscience, or a related field. Experience in optics/photonics is preferred but not required. Strong interest in nonlinear dynamics, condensed-matter physics, and stochastic processes is valued. Good communication and collaboration skills are important.

Funding: Full-time salaried PhD appointment with a starting gross salary of 3,115 euros per month plus employment benefits. AMOLF also supports housing and visa arrangements for international candidates and reimburses transport and furnishing expenses.
