About this position

Postdoctoral position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands on ocean–sea ice interactions, with a focus on cryospheric science, climate science, oceanography, atmospheric science, and physics.

The project aims to improve understanding of fine-scale ocean/sea-ice processes, including melting and breakage of sea ice, using an ocean Large Eddy Simulation (LES) framework and a Discrete Element Model (DEM) of sea ice. Simulations will be validated against in-situ and remote sensing observations from the Arctic and Antarctic, and the successful candidate will develop parameterizations for use in coarser climate models.

This is a fully funded postdoc within the European Research Council (ERC) ICE-FLOE project. The appointment is for 1-3 years, with a workload of 38-40 hours per week, and salary/benefits follow the Dutch university collective agreement. The post may also include collaboration with TU Delft researchers and international partners, and there may be an opportunity to assist with a research cruise in Antarctica.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in oceanography, cryospheric science, climate science, or atmospheric science; experience with LES, turbulence research, and Julia is advantageous but not required; strong English; ability to work independently; and availability to start between January and March 2027.

How to apply: Submit the application online via AcademicTransfer by 10 November 2026. Prepare a CV with publication list, a 2-3 page motivation letter, MSc transcripts, and a copy of your PhD thesis (or a draft/write-up if the thesis is not yet available). Shortlisted applicants will be asked for at least three references.
