About this position

TU Delft is advertising a Postdoc in Ocean–Sea Ice Interactions within the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. The project focuses on the physics of coupled ocean/sea ice processes, including sea ice melting and breakage, turbulent interactions at sub-grid scales, and the development of parameterizations for use in global climate models.

The research combines ocean Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and a Discrete Element Model (DEM) of sea ice, with validation against in-situ and remote sensing observations from both the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice regions. The position is part of the European Research Council (ERC) ICE-FLOE project and includes collaboration with TU Delft researchers and international partners. There may also be an opportunity to assist with a research cruise in Antarctica.

This is a fully funded postdoctoral position at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The contract is temporary for 1-3 years, with a salary range of €3546-€5538 per month and standard Dutch university employment benefits.

Applicants should hold a PhD in oceanography, cryospheric science, climate science, or atmospheric science. Helpful but not required: experience with LES, turbulence research, and the Julia programming language. The post also asks for interest in solid/fluid mechanics, the ability to work independently, and excellent written and spoken English. The expected start window is January-March 2027 (flexible).

To apply, submit the online application by 10 November 2026. Required documents include a CV with publication list, a motivation letter describing your research interests and completed projects, MSc transcripts, and a copy of your PhD thesis or a draft/write-up if the thesis is not yet available. At least three references will be requested for shortlisted candidates.
