About this position
PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in Ocean–Sea Ice Interactions, hosted by the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. The project focuses on the physics of coupled ocean/sea-ice processes, including melting, breakage, turbulence, and sub-grid-scale interactions that affect climate model performance.
The successful candidate will work with an ocean Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and a Discrete Element Model (DEM) of sea ice, compare simulations with in-situ and remote sensing observations from the Arctic and Antarctic, and develop parameterizations for use in coarser climate models. The position is part of the ERC ICE-FLOE project and may include collaboration with TU Delft and international partners, with a possible opportunity to assist with a research cruise in Antarctica.
Academic keywords: oceanography, cryosphere, climate modeling, Earth science, physics, applied mathematics, fluid/solid mechanics, numerical simulation, parameterization, remote sensing, Arctic, Antarctic.
Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in Earth sciences, oceanography, physics, applied mathematics, or engineering; research experience in climate/oceanography/cryosphere/atmospheric science; strong English; ability to work independently; Julia experience is a plus.
Funding: fully funded PhD employment for 4 years, with salary from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus.
Deadline: 3 November 2026. Start date expected between January and March 2027.
How to apply: submit the application online through the TU Delft careers portal and upload a CV, motivation letter, transcripts, and MSc thesis (or substitute). Shortlisted applicants will be asked for at least three references.
