About this position
Aarhus University, Department of Chemistry, is advertising a fully funded postdoctoral position in operando on-chip investigation of failure in optical phase change materials using ultrafast X-rays. The project focuses on understanding failure mechanisms in optical phase change materials used in photonic devices, with an emphasis on synchrotron X-ray scattering, XFEL methods, and time-resolved structural characterization.
The postdoc will work on operando and time-resolved experiments, combining laser pump/X-ray probe total scattering, WAXS, SAXS, imaging, and femtosecond X-ray diffraction to study structure and dynamics during switching under device-relevant conditions. Target facilities include DESY, MAX IV, European XFEL, ESRF, APS, and LCLS, depending on beamtime awards. The project is supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.
Applicants should have a PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related field, plus experience with synchrotron scattering and/or XFEL experiments, crystallographic and scattering data analysis, and programming skills such as Python. Strong knowledge of crystallography, powder X-ray diffraction, diffuse scattering, phase transitions, and background modeling is expected. The role also values experience with operando/time-resolved experiments and X-ray instrumentation, along with fluent English and the ability to work independently and in teams.
